Project

Fossil Fuels, the Building Industry, and Human Health

Cities & Buildings, Fossil Fuels

This project reviews existing research focused on the health impact of fossil fuel polymer-based materials used in buildings. It also analyzes where, and to what extent, fossil fuel polymer-based materials are most typically used in the design space and the building industry, and where alternatives are being developed for the purposes of improving the life cycle costs that are incurred when plastics and polymers from fossil fuels are used in buildings.

Grant Result

Nearly everything in our built environment is permeated by chemicals derived from fossil fuels. Yet there is little data about the health risks. This digest builds a case for more research, disclosure, and education.
