Event Summary

This year’s Carnot Prize, for distinguished contributions to energy policy, was awarded to Dr. Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA).

In his policy address, Dr. Birol shares his transformative vision of the IEA as a global body leading complex energy transitions with a deep understanding of and commitment to the challenges of inclusion and equity.

University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann presents the Carnot Prize to Dr. Birol, with introductory remarks by Ernest Moniz, U.S. Secretary of Energy and a special congratulations by Jonathan Pershing, the U.S. Special Envoy for Climate Change, from the COP22 meetings in Marrakesh.

Dr. Ernest Moniz served as United States Secretary of Energy from May 21, 2013 to January 19, 2017, where he was tasked with implementing critical Department of Energy missions in support of President Obama’s goals of growing the economy, enhancing security and protecting the environment.
