Kleinman Center Tackles Urban Issues at World Urban Forum

Cities & Buildings

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — This week, delegates from the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy and two other research centers from the University of Pennsylvania bring their expertise on urban issues to the World Urban Forum (WUF9), the world’s premier conference on urban issues.

In preparation for the event, the Kleinman Center joined forces with the Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR) and Perry World House (PWH) to publish a white paper series that they are now sharing with leading policymakers and practitioners from across the globe.

Penn’s delegation of 14 scholars, students, and staff members are hosting an exhibition and speaker series as well as attending the week-long event. The presentation space highlights center initiatives and research that specifically relates to the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as outlined in the New Urban Agenda.

Showcased at WUF9 is a paper written by Kleinman Center Faculty Director Mark Alan Hughes and Deputy Directory Cory Colijn, “Putting Energy into Implementation: Challenges to Subnational Participation in SDG 7.”

“For energy,” Colijn said, “implementation challenges affect subnational actors in several ways—limiting their ability to achieve policy goals, distorting the policy outcomes they do achieve, and wreaking havoc on their ability to meet Paris Agreement goals.”

This paper is part of university’s larger collaborative series entitled: “Penn: Current Research on Sustainable Urban Development.” For more information on the paper series, the exhibition, and the speaker series that will be held in the Penn booth, please visit http://wuf9.upenn.edu.
