The Philadelphia Green Capital Corp (PGCC) is the non-profit “green bank” affiliate of the Philadelphia Energy Authority that aims to grow the clean energy economy in the Philadelphia region. As a green bank in Southeast Pennsylvania, PGCC’s mission is to connect projects to capital to drive a robust, equitable, clean energy market in the region, support PEA, and respond to the local challenges of climate change. PGCC uses proven green bank tools to unlock capital for clean energy projects, to scale and amplify PEA’s current work, and to bring new financial products to the Southeast Pennsylvania region’s clean energy economy. The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) is an independent municipal authority focused on energy affordability and sustainability issues in Philadelphia. In 2016, PEA launched the Philadelphia Energy Campaign, a $1 billion, 10-year investment in energy efficiency and clean energy projects to create 10,000 jobs, and to build a robust, equitable clean energy economy in Philadelphia. To date, PEA and PGCC have helped launch over $900 million in projects and created over 7,500 jobs.
This Kleinman fellowship will enable a Penn graduate student to spend 10-12 weeks working on issues related to energy policy and programs at PGCC. Applicants should be highly motivated individuals with experience working on energy, finance, sustainability, government, and/or economic issues.
Context
Under the supervision of PGCC’s Senior Manager of Partnerships & Clean Energy Programs, the Kleinman Fellow will support PGCC’s continued growth as a green bank entity serving the Southeast Pennsylvania region. The Kleinman Fellow will focus on pipeline development, program development and management, market education, stakeholder engagement, and promoting accessible financing & technical assistance resources to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Philadelphia. Most of the Fellow’s time will be spent supporting PGCC’s new products, including the development of new financing products & tools and early-stage partnership development with local lenders. The exact scope of work will be designed to complement the Kleinman Fellow’s existing skills and desired learning experiences.
Tasks may include a combination of the following:
Background and Skills Required
- A self-starter with strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Demonstrated interest in energy, sustainability, climate change, impact investing, affordable housing, finance, and/or other relevant topics
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: financial modeling, program or product development (especially in the finance sector), data analytics, public policy and research, project and/or non-profit management
- Ability to manage simultaneous projects/work streams, set priorities, and exercise independent judgment
The following skills would be advantageous:
- Experience in energy and/or finance program development
- Experience in a company that is active in energy projects
- Experience in a start-up, non-profit, or entrepreneurial environment
Stipend
Fellows will receive $10,000 from the Kleinman Center. The selected student will be responsible for their own travel and housing.
