Investigating the Implications of Data Center Development for Energy Communities in Transition

The objective of our research is to investigate how the wave of data-center-based economic development is affecting energy communities, given their histories with an evolving energy sector. We will investigate (1) community perceptions of data center developments, as well as the strength of community voices (i.e., degree of procedural justice) in local decisions about new data centers, and (2) the degree to which a diversity of stakeholders believe that data centers can form a viable economic development strategy to yield resilient communities.
