John Quigley, former secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Former Environmental Protection Secretary John Quigley is heading to work at the University of Pennsylvania six weeks after he resigned amid a controversy over an expletive-filled email he sent to fellow environmental advocates.

The Ivy League university in Philadelphia announced Wednesday that Quigley would start there July 1 as a senior fellow in its Kleinman Center for Energy Policy. He will give a public lecture on policy challenges in the fall, teach a spring seminar and write blog posts, Penn said.

Quigley, a former mayor of Hazelton and one-time gubernatorial candidate, led the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources under then-Gov. Ed Rendell from 2009-2011. Gov. Tom Wolf appointed him to lead the DEP when he took office in January 2015.

Quigley came under fire for a tense relationship with gas drillers and lawmakers who opposed new regulations the DEP sought. His resignation was announced May 20, days after Wolf's office acknowledged concerns over an email Quigley sent criticizing groups for not fighting hard enough for the new rules.
