Penn News Today Highlights Kleinman Policy Digest

The work of Kleinman Center grant recipients Professor Erick Guerra and graduate student Lucia Artavia, both of PennDesign, was recently featured in Penn News Today. They researched and wrote this policy digest about urban transportation in Indonesia and the widespread use of motorcycles.

Motorcycles have become a primary mode of transportation in many cities, but despite the benefits of their size and maneuverability on heavily congested roads, the inexpensive ones people can afford typically run on unadulterated gasoline and contribute significantly to local air pollution. The policy digest explores the potential for electric motorcycles, and examines the present and future capacity of the electric grid relative to accommodating the resulting increase in energy use.
