DEP's Air Quality, Energy and Sustainability (AQES) Program runs a year-round Student Internship Program.  During their internships, students have an opportunity to explore the various AQES offices, as well as present their research and findings to upper management.  They are also given opportunities to attend meetings, hearings, presentations and other special events.  AQES covers a wide variety of topics, including air quality monitoring, planning, permitting and regulation; air toxics; energy policy and economic analysis; energy markets; energy efficiency and renewable energy; energy resiliency; electricity delivery and reliability; electric vehicle infrastructure and technology; fossil energy; advanced energy technologies; nuclear energy; radiation protection, compliance, and enforcement; sustainability; recycling outreach and communications and carbon emissions.  For more information about AQES and its activities, visit http://www.nj.gov/dep/aqes.

The AQES Student Internship Program offers opportunities for students in the summer, fall and spring.  Up to five (5) internships will be offered each session. While these internships are unpaid, the Intern Program Manager will work with an educational institution’s cooperative education office to enable students to obtain college credit upon request.

Given the broad range of topics covered by AQES, students in a variety of educational disciplines (e.g., environmental science/studies, geography, chemistry, biology, physics, meteorology, computer mapping/geographic information systems (GIS), engineering, economics, law, business, communications, graphic design, etc.) will be considered.  Eligible candidates must have completed their first year of college.

Summer 2017 applications are now being accepted.

Application Requirements

In order to ensure that interns have time to complete their projects, we require that they work a minimum of 8 weeks with no less than 14 hours per week.  In addition, to facilitate group intern interaction and activities, Summer 2017 interns must start no later than the week of June 5th and end no sooner than the week of July 17th.
